Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #49 “Court of Lions, Alhambra”

Text on reverse of card reads:

“Some of the fairest gems of Mahomedan architecture are to be found, not in Africa or Asia, but in Spain, so long the seat of Moorish rule. This is the Alhambra Palace, a frowning fortress without but a very paradise within. “Al-hamra” is Arabic for The Ked.” Begun on the ridge of Granada in the reign of Mahomed I (1232-73 it took nearly a century to build, not being finished until the time of Yusuf 1 0333-54- The Court of Lions is so called from the twelve marble lions round the fountain in the centre; enclosing it are 126 columns.”
