Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #41 “Venus of Milo”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“For over 2,000 years the canons of beauty established by the poets and sculptors of little city states in the relatively tiny country of Greece have dominated the world of art: and by common consent this statue has been adopted as the supreme achievement of the sculptor’s craft surviving to our days. It is known as the Venus of Milo, Venus being the Romanised form of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and Milo the modern name for the island of Melos where the masterpiece was found in 1820. Probably dating from the 3rd century B.C., the statue’s lovely contours and graceful pose have never been excelled.”
