Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #40 “Theseion, Athens”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“Here, better than in any other Greek ruin, do we gain a good idea of the simple dignity of the temples which in the great days of Greece, goo years before the birth of Christ, were raised to the gods. Best preserved of all the marvellous remains of Greece, this temple stands north-west of the Acropolis at Athens, and was probably built as a shrine for Hephaestus, the god of fire: not in honour of Theseus, the hero-king of Athens, whose exploits are celebrated in its carvings, and after whom it has been called the Theseion. It is 104 feet long, 45% feet broad, and 33 feet high, with six columns at each end and thirteen along each side.”
