Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #36 “The Pont Du Gard”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“Of all the architectural works which the Romans lavished on their empire, none are more impressive than the aqueducts. The Pont du Gard in southern France carried the waters of the Eure and Airon across the valley of the Gard to the town of Nemausus (now Nimes). It consists of three superimposed tiers of arches of which the topmost, 880 feet long, bore the conduit: at its highest point it is 160 feet above the bed of the river. These aqueducts were constructed not only near Rome, but throughout the Roman Empire from Spain to Asia Minor, and from Africa to France.”
