Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #21 “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders, though credited in legend to Semiramis, were built by King Nebuchadrezzar for his queen, with the help of whose father, King of Media, he had shaken off the Assyrian yoke and destroyed Nineveh in 606 B.C. They were constructed of stone in the form of receding terraces supported on arches, with apartments beneath and soil on layers of reeds and lead above. Their remains to-day are identified with a vaulted crypt north-east of Nebuchadrezzar’s palace, and traces of an hydraulic arrangement for watering the plants.”
