Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #17 “Mausoleum at Halicarnassus”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“From 387 to 353 B.C. Caria in Asia Minor was ruled by King Mausclus as governor under the king of Persia At his death his wife Artemisia employed the best Greek sculp tors of the day to erect a tomb for him, so marvellous that it was accounted one of the Seven Wonders, and has given us our word “mausoleum.” On the solid rectangular tomb-chamber 36 Ionic columns supported a stepped pyramid-crowned by the royal pair in a chariot – the whole being 140 feet high. The structure was finally destroyed in 1522 by the Knights of S. John, but a few sculptural details are preserved.”
