Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #44 “Tombs at the Appian Way”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“The traveller to Ancient Rome had a foretaste of the glories awaiting him in the splendid tombs which lined his approach. In ancient cities it was not customary to bury within the walls, so the roads radiating from Rome became a kind of cemetery, especially the Appian Way, first laid down by the notorious Appius Claudius in 312 B.C. and here shown restored. In the background is the immense circular tomb of Caecilia Metella, wife of Crassus and daughter of the Quintus Caecilius Metellus who conquered Crete. Sixty-five feet in diameter, it was converted into a fort in the Middle Ages and is still standing.”
