Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #30 “Bronze Buddha at Kobe”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“There are several colossal bronze figures of Buddha and Amida in Japan, the most famous being the Daibutsu at Kamakura; but hardly less interesting is the Buddha at Hyogo, a suburb of Kole across the Minatogawa. It stands in the grounds of the Nofukuji temple; is 45 feet high and 85 feet round the waist. To the interior of the image is a shrine coutaining a number of smaller unages and an altar to Amida, one of the numerous gods of the Buddhist Pantheon and hardly distinguishable from Buddha himself. The statue owed its erection to the enter prise of a Kube paper-maker.”
