Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #26 “The Great Wall of China”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“Stretching from Shanhai-kwan, on the Gulf of Liaotung, to the Kiayu Pass at the other end of China, a distance of nearly 1.500 miles, the Great Wall is the longest artificial barrier in the world. It was begun in 214 R.C. by the Emperor Hwang-ti, and carried on by forced labour, incredible numbers of unwilling workers dying at their task. His successors finished it, and it has been several times repaired, especially under the Ming dynasty (16th century). Built of masonry and brick, it was in- tended to exclude the Tartars. This section is at the Nankow Pass.”
