Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #23 “Hittite God, Carchemish”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“The Hittites were a mysterious people of Asia Minor whose existence as a considerable power has only recently been revealed. A confederacy rather than a race, they were powerful from 2600 B.C. onwards with their capital at Boghaz Keui, till about 1200 B.C. when foreign invasions caused the transference of political power to Carchemish, hitherto an outpost of empire on the Euphrates. This massive, square-hewn god of black stone, throned on a lion-pedestal, was unearthed on the right of a palace-gateway in the public square. A minor, eagle-headed deity between the lions acts as his attendant.”
