Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #2 “The Colossi of Memnon”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“Apart from the Sphinx and Pyramids no remains of Ancient Egypt are more famous than the so-called Colossi of Memnon at Thebes. The two enormous statues are actually of Amenhotep III, king of Egypt about 1400 R.C., and his wife Tiyi. and they stood before the portal of a vanished temple; 65 feet high including the pedestal. they were carved from solid rock and floated down the Nile on barges to their position. After the right-hand one was shattered by an earthquake (27 A.D.), it emitted a strange noise at sunrise; but 200 years later it was repaired, since when it has been silent.”
