Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #15 “Temple Carved from Living Rock”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“Lost in the barren mountains between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea lie the ruins of a marvellous city hewn from rose-red stone – Petra. They stand in an impregnable hollow whose approach is a long defile in places 1,200 feet high and only 6 feet across. Ringed about with tombs, the stronghold belonged to a robber-race, the Nabateans, who used it first as a treasure house and burial. ground, and later (400 B.C.) as their capital. This rock-hewn temple, 147 feet wide by 138 feet high, is approached by steps cut in a gully that leads to a mountain-top an hour’s march from the city.”
