Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #10 “The Sphinx at Gizeh”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“The Sphinx and the Pyramids epitomize the majesty and the mystery of Egypt; and the Sphinx has taken the greater hold on men’s imaginations Many legends have gathered about it, but the facts are these: It was partly built, partly hewn from a solid rock about 4800 years ago, probably in the reign of Khaira of the Fourth Dy- nasty. It represents a couchant lion with a man’s head, and is 253 feet high and 164 feet long. The sand has almost covered it, but between its paws was an open-air temple. The Sphinx as an art-form was common in Egypt and symbolized the- deified might of the pharaoh.”
