Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #48 “Mosque at Cardova”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“What is today the pride of Cordova on the Guadalquivir in Spain, its lovely Hispano- Mauresque cathedral, has had as eventful a history as any place of worship in the world. It was built by the Arabs on the site of a Visigoth church, and was a mosque until 12 when it was captured by the Christians and became a cathedral. It is still an exquisite piece of work in spite of Chris tian defacements; but under the Arabs it was considered second in holiness only to the Ka’aba, and Cordova was called the “Mecca of the West.””
