Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #47 “Unfinished Temple at Segesta”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“The coasts of Sicily were thronged with Greek colonies and by the fifth century BC some of the inland peoples had become quite Greek, Such were the citizens of Segesta, in the north-west, of whose town this massive temple is a memorial. It stands almost exactly as it was left, for it was never finished. Of the Doric order, it is 200 feet long and 85 feet broad, and the height of the columns with their capitals is 29 feet. Bosses of stone round the platform, to provide purchase for lifting-tackle, were never chipped off, and may still be seen.”
