Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #16 “Temple of Diana at Ephesus”

Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.

Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.

Text on reverse of card reads:

“Five successive temples were raised at Ephesus to the half- oriental goddess identified by the Greeks with Artemis and by the Romans with Diana; it was the last and most glorious that was by many placed first. among the Seven Wonders of the World. The fourth temple, largely financed by Croesus of Lydia, was burnt down in 356 B.C., and the Ephesians at once decided to rebuild it more splendidly than ever. At the visit of Alexander the Great it was incomplete, but the citizens jealously refused his offer to bear the cost of construction. Thus restored, it stood till about the third century A.D.”
