Wills’s Cigarettes “Wonders of the Past” Cigarette Card #14 “Easter Island Image”
Produced in 1926 by W. D. & H. O. Wills.
Issued by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“Few mysteries have been so baffling as the presence on a lonely island in the South Pacific, inhabited to-day by about 250 natives, of numerous huge stone images, the origin and purpose of which are unknown, Of inhuman ugliness, their carving and erection must yet have demanded no mean skill. spite of theories about a vanished race of hideous giants, the most likely explanation is that the images are not much more than 200 years old, and were erected by the forefathers of the present inhabitants, and that religious feuds caused many to be overthrown and their meaning finally forgotten.”
