Cavanders “Ancient Egypt” Cigarette Card #12 “Boats on the Nile”. Produced in 1928.
Text on reverse of card reads:
“Shipbuilding did not become common in Egypt until its rulers became masters of the Phoenician forests; but they built vessels for navigating the Nile.
The larger boats were built of acacia planks. They had spacious cabins, one mast and a large square sail. Their long rudder was suspended on a wooden pillar, and according to the direction of a rope held by the steers- man, it slided to the right or left.
The men generally pulled standing.
or rose to the stroke.”
